Il termine musica indie (neologismo della lingua inglese derivato dalla contrazione del termine independent) è riferibile ad un insieme di generi musicali caratterizzato da una certa indipendenza, reale oppure percepita, dalla musica pop commerciale e da una cultura cosiddetta mainstream (cultura di massa), nonché da un approccio personale alla musica stessa. Il termine Indie è spesso confuso con il tipo di suono prodotto dal musicista quando è in realtà il modo in cui il suono è presentato o prodotto. Infatti, esso è spesso associato a un artista o a un gruppo che non fa parte della cultura mainstream o che fa musica al di fuori dell'influenza della stessa. Sebbene lo stile musicale di questi gruppi possa variare molto, tale associazione deriva infatti da un atteggiamento tipo "fai-da-te" e dall'abilità di lavorare al di fuori delle grandi corporations. Tuttavia, non è affatto detto che un'etichetta che si definisce indipendente garantisca un approccio libero, non orientato verso il marketing o comunque a uno stile musicale prettamente commerciale, né d'altra parte è vero che le major stesse siano orientate esclusivamente alla produzione di musica commerciale (vedi Radiohead, Pulp, Sonic Youth e The Flaming Lips). Più comune in Italia è la definizione indipendente per identificare tale approccio, preferendo usare il termine indie per definire un genere musicale vero e proprio, comunque spesso associabile a un approccio indipendente a livello di etichetta discografica. La parola indie è utilizzata talvolta per fare riferimento specificamente a vari generi o suoni. Negli anni novanta molti gruppi Britpop erano definiti indie, anche se la maggior parte degli artisti avevano siglato contratti con le major e dominavano le classifiche di vendita."
